BN109 - Nate and his friends go camping.

During boarding, I provide direction and notes at waypoints like thumb and rough pass to help clarify on the artists intentions. After delivery and 1st animatic, I was looking to push the intimate mood of the scene. Likewise, I adjusted framing to keep the shots more personal, made the camera more of a character in the scene, and, AS ALWAYS, looked to get a fresh gag in where ever I could.

BN210 - Nate battles the demon of doubt in his imagination.

This was a complicated episode, and extremely fun to work on! The mixed media approach required many departments working together, and I was lucky to be a part of it. Due to the size of the episode, I had to contribute earlier, during the thumbing process, so we could manage handoffs to multiple artists, as well as checking in with design for clarity of action and doability(TM) as the whole thing was to be animated in-house. It was all worth it in the end; you’ve never seen anything like this on TV!

Co-directed by me, written by Mitch Watson, thumbs by Maria Nguyen, boards by Ainsley Dye, animatic by Matt Van Loon.

BN154 - Nate and Francis evict Nate’s Uncle and Aunt

Here’s an example of action notes given after 1st animatic. Trims to help with the continuity of the story, and building out a fight sequence to really heighten the stakes. Action should always push the narrative of the story and not just be action for action’s sake. And for some reason, I like to give notes in PURPLE.
